EPA Record of Decision Amendment Issued

On November 2, 2023, EPA issued a Record of Decision Amendment (RODA) selecting the amended remedy for cleanup of the Kerr-McGee Chemical Corporation (Soda Springs Plant) Superfund Site in Soda Springs, Idaho. The amended remedy is based on the Proposed Plan issued by EPA on March 9, 2023, and considers public input provided during the public comment period (March 9 to April 14, 2023), including input provided at the open house and public hearing held March 29, 2023. A Responsiveness Summary included in the RODA summarizes the comments received on the Proposed Plan and provides EPA’s responses. Next steps will include the detailed design and implementation of the remedy.

The amended remedy will address remaining soil and groundwater contamination at the site. This includes restrictions on land use to reduce exposure to contamination and to make sure that the cleanup continues to protect human health and the environment. Contaminants in groundwater will be cleaned up through in-situ and ex-situ treatment on-site and monitored natural attenuation off-site. The amended remedy is the fastest of all cleanup options considered and is expected to restore groundwater to its beneficial use as a drinking water resource.
